In remembrance of the Rhine Catastrophe and its upcoming 100th anniversary, the Rhine Monument will be given the place it deserves. Situated in a clearing of the riverside woodland, the monument will be surrounded by water to remind us of the disastrous flood that took place in the past. Around the monument, knobbly riverside trees such as birch trees and black alders adorn the dynamic landscape symbolizing the tremendous force of the water. The «impression path» explains the scope of the Rhine Catastrophe when half of the Principality of Liechtenstein was flooded about a hundred years ago.
In the past the Zollstrasse was one of the most significant connecting roads between Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein, and still is today. Once there were magnificent tree alleys and fruit trees along the road. The project concept incorporates this feature creating an attractive, multifaceted entrance into town. Attractive bands of colourful flowering shrubs provide decorative elements to the tree alley. Based on the new design of the Zollstrasse, Schaan can boast a unique tree alley which will stand out not only due to its colour variety but also from an ecological point of view providing protection and a natural habitat to valuable species. The overall project is designed to integrate both the history of the area and the transformations and changes of time.
