In the marginalized communities of southern Zimbabwe, with a semi-arid climate and a very short rainy season, the Gravity Irrigation project allows local farmers to create the environment needed for growing vegetables and cereals.
The fields that benefits from this system are located below a water dam, which stores and retains the rainwater of the rain season and from there (the dam), through channels and pipes the water that has been stored is guided by the natural slope to the vegetable crops.
These crops are managed as community gardens where several farmers’ families join and share a cultivation area of approximately 1 to 3 hectares; the irrigation takes place 1 or 2 times a day and is carried out as a joint action.
The Pro Africa Development Trust acts as the responsible of helping and teaching the communities to build and repair their own gravity irrigation system and to establish the community gardens.
