The village square of Bonaduz is the spatial and social center of the community – a place for everyday life, remembrance, and encounters. The planned redesign aims to combine its historical identity with the demands of a modern, vibrant village life. The design competition resulted in a concept based on the guiding principles of openness and diversity.
oriented towards usability and harmonious integration into the architectural and landscape identity of Bonaduz.
The traffic and development concept with the underground parking garage in the area of the square is an important component both spatially and technically.
Spatially, this means that the existing above-ground parking spaces can be eliminated, and only delivery traffic will be expected. The square will remain car-free; retractable bollards will regulate delivery traffic. Paving extending to the church will strengthen the connection between sacred, cultural, and public space. The choice of materials—natural stone, gravel, recycled materials—reflects this.
Paving stones create continuity and a connection to the existing structure. Seating, water features, and shade elements enhance the overall experience.
The pavilion gives the square a striking architectural accent and a meeting point that, on the one hand, strengthens the character of the space and, on the other hand, brings a more playful and charming element to the forefront. The design consistently pursues the goal of...
To design the village square of Bonaduz as an identity-forming, climate-adapted and versatile open space – a place that honors the past and shapes the future.
