In densely built and predominantly paved urban areas, the summer heat has become unbearable in some cases. This phenomenon is also noticeable in the center of Schaan. In order to counteract these tendencies, potentials for open spaces in the town center of Schaan have been identified. A key component of the open space development concept is the Town Hall Square situated in the heart of the Schaan town center.
The new Town Hall Square consists of three parts. The lower Town Hall Square, adjacent to the main road, creates a welcoming scenery for leisure with its de-paved gravel area, impressive benches, and a monolithic granite drinking fountain. The upper Town Hall Square features the new pergola, which defines the space. Fragrant climbing plants adorn the green cube providing shade against the glare of the sun. The third area comprises a green and permeable parking facility, conveniently located near the entrance of the Town Hall.
In addition to shade-providing trees, facade and roof greening, as well as cooling water features, the project incorporates numerous retention areas to address ecological and climatic aspects. Permeable areas planted with flowering perennials ensure sustainable rainwater management.
The result is a comprehensive project that meets the design and ecological requirements of our time. Following the motto “Schaa Grüa Blau,” the municipality of Schaan will acquire a new identity making it even more liveable.
