Hochparterre 2022 - «The Best»
The Zollstrasse has long been, and still is, one of the most important connecting routes between Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. It was once characterized by magnificent tree-lined avenues and fruit trees. This project revives this quality, creating an attractive and multifaceted entrance to the town. Immediately after the Rhine bridge, the dense hardwood floodplain forest forms a green and imposing gateway. The grassy vegetation on both sides further emphasizes this effect. Beyond, the pine and oak forest thins out, and the magnificent entrance to Schaan unfolds with its culturally significant tree-lined avenue. The avenue is bordered by attractive bands of colorful flowering perennials.
In remembrance of the Rhine disaster and on the approaching 100th anniversary, the Rhine memorial is being given a fitting location. In the clearing in the floodplain forest, the memorial is surrounded by the element of water, echoing the devastating flood of that time. All around, gnarled floodplain trees such as birches and black alders adorn the topographically varied landscape, symbolizing the untamed power of the water. The Impressions Trail explains the extent of the Rhine disaster, which flooded half of the Principality of Liechtenstein almost a century ago.
The redesign of Zollstrasse in Schaan will create a distinctive tree-lined avenue, which not only boasts a vibrant array of colors but also provides ecological protection and habitat for valuable creatures. The design reflects the town's history and showcases the changing times.
